I'm hoping that comparing what other freelancers do will give me a better sense of perspective. I do, however, want to make more money, but I'm not sure what to charge. Now, I don't want to change my niche because I love what I do and I'm good at it. Admittedly, the gardening niche pays poorly because many clients assume that anyone can write about growing plants, so projects that only pay 2 or 3 cents per word are common. Most of my clients so far have been ok with this rate. Now, I can't work out how that translates into price per word, but even so, it seems like a lot of money, and it made me wonder if I'm selling myself short.įor context, I specialize in one niche only (gardening) and I charge $0.05 per word. Saw a recent post about freelancers increasing their rates, and I was surprised to see that some writers charge $90 or almost $150 an hour. If you don't like them, just scroll past them - easy! No need to call other freelancers amateurs because they don't do things your way, or slap them with backhanded insults. But posts like that are the bulk of this community. I get it: you're tired of seeing the same questions asked week in, week out.

Even if I was charging by the hour, I would ask the same question: should I charge more?Īnd what I really didn't expect from you all was rudeness. I did the maths, I know what works in my favor, I just don't know if I'm underselling myself. The question I asked wasn't "Is it better to charge per word or by the hour?" yet that's what most comments focus on.
